Purchasing doors for your home can get pricey. This depends on the style and what material the door is made of. An exterior door can cost way too much because they are able to withstand weather conditions and are made of steel.
Well, in our case we needed to purchase an exterior door for our outdoor bathroom. We purchased a primed steel exterior door from the Home Depot. I have placed a link below for you to find it. As you can see, the door is solid and plain and it still costs about $177. That’s expensive for a completely plain door.
Personally, I did not want to spend so much money on an exterior door. So I opted to go with this one and I would style the door the way I wanted. I started off by purchasing what they call at Home Depot thermally modified pine shingle molding. I purchased these because they are weatherproof as well. This way when I glue them to the door I would not have any problems with them going bad over time, such as mildew developing, stainage, etc. I wanted to make 3 squares in two different sizes. The smaller one to be placed in the middle of the door.
I purchased two of the shingle molds since they come in 192 inches in length. I cut them using a miter saw. I will put a link below of the one I have. Keep in mind that the miter saw is a very expensive tool. If you don’t have this on hand you can use a handsaw or you can rent these tools from the Home Depot. The Home Depot is pretty cool because if you don’t have some of these tools on hand you can rent them and return them back for a huge discount.
Since I wanted two of the same size squares and one square to be smaller in height. So for the length of all 3 squares was cut the same which was 24 ¼ inches. For the larger square the height I cut was 12 ⅜ inches. The smaller square height was cut at 9 ⅛ inches. I made sure to cut them at 45-degree angle so when I glued them they squares would look like picture frames.
After all the pieces were cut I painted them with a small painting brush. For the paint, I used the Behr Paint and Primer in One semi-gloss classic brown. I will place a link below. This paint is really great and its meant for exteriors so you won’t have to worry about the paint fading, stains, or moisture. You will probably only need about a quart of this paint because you are only painting the pieces that we cut. We painted over it 3 times to make sure the paint was evenly distributed and there were no streaks from the brush.
After the moulds were dry, we glued the pieces together for two large squares and one small square. To glue them together we used the gorilla glue heavy construction adhesive that is weather resistant. This is a very strong construction adhesive so it works perfectly for the job. Plus, it’s paintable so after we glued the pieces we touched up the corners with some more paint.
Once the squares were all glued together and ready to go. We made sure to glue the smallest square in the middle and the bigger squares on one the bottom and one on the top. We glued them to the door with the same gorilla glue adhesive. After it all dried the look was completed.

This is a great option if you have a plain door and don’t want to replace it. This is a great money saving option and it has a beautiful finished look.
